We recently featured (here on Rat Rods)some of the rodents that showed up at the 2019 SEMA Show. Probably the car that garnered the most attention was this awesome 1959 Chevrolet El Camino. Yep, this car started as a stylish truck and was transformed into an 800 horsepower ground-pounding custom rat rod! I can’t imagine the amount of time that went into the fabrication of this car, it is truly a work of art. It almost harkens back to the creations of Big Daddy Ed Roth and George Barris. This car was so popular that it spawned dozens of articles when it was shown at SEMA. Check out more below!
Here you can really tell this is still a 1959 Chevrolet. The unique teardrop taillights and fins are one of the classic design elements of the 1959 model year. Other than some original cues from the original car, this thing is fully customized. There have been flaps fabricated into the roof and the interior is accessed by climbing through the top. What do you think of the patina body with modern shiny wheels and tires?
The engine is a 400 cubic inch Dart small-block topped with a 6-71 BDS supercharger. The usual go-fast internals is present including a custom crank and forged pistons. The horsepower rating is around 800 ponies, which rates it about 2hp per cube. This thing sounds awesome! All this power gets to the ground via a Monster 700R4 tranny and Dana 60 rear end. One of the neat tricks on the interior is how the transmission shifts. Check out a video of this car here on YouTube where you can see it in its full glory!
